Under the supervision of the Supervisor of the Supervisor of Academic Instruction, CF or Educational Administrator designee, and functional lead of the Senior Librarian (CF) or Librarian (CF) when applicable, the Library Technical Assistant (LTA) (Safety) will perform the following duties in accordance with the State Personnel Board classification specification within the Institution's Legal or General Library collections. These duties may be performed in a library that is staffed by a Senior librarian or Librarian, or the LTA may facilitate incarcerated people access to libraries by performing these duties in a satellite library without continuous active supervision from an education administrator, a Senior Librarian or Librarian. The LTA will have responsibility to supervise, train, and evaluate the work of at least two incarcerated people library clerks for a minimum of 120 hours per pay period. Maintain order, prevent escapes and injury to themselves or to property; maintain security of work areas and work material; and inspect premises for contraband such as weapons or illegal drugs.

Working Conditions
About this location -- Sierra Conservation Center (SCC) is located in the foothills near Jamestown, California, in the heart of the Mother Lode Gold Country.It is adjacent to the Stanislaus National Forest, offering pine trees, mountain streams, and an abundance of recreational activities (fishing, swimming, camping, skiing, golfing, etc.).The prison is approximately 70 miles from Yosemite National Park.
The primary mission of SCC is to provide housing, programs and services for minimum and medium custody incarcerated individuals, to aid in their rehabilitation. SCC is responsible for the training and placement of male incarcerated individuals in the Conservation Camp Program. SCC administers 31 male camps located throughout California.

Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. Candidates new to CDCR/CCHCS are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, as well as a Tuberculosis test/evaluation prior to appointment, followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Knowledge of: The principles of professional library and information sciences to perform required library duties. The principles of standard library reference tools to assist inmates in locating materials and conducting research. Classification/cataloging techniques employed in fiction materials and pre-cataloging techniques employed in nonfiction materials to facilitate organization and access of materials. The standard practices of library science to facilitate effective library operations. Library procedures to train and direct the work of inmates (library workers) in library science. Data processing techniques (e.g., computer, software/hardware, automated circulation systems, etc.) related to library and information sciences to perform required library duties. Research methodologies (e.g., search engines, books, etc.) used to perform required library duties. Library materials, including governmental publications, pamphlets, newspapers, manuscripts, periodicals, audiovisual material, and electronic delivery systems to access resources. Time keeping forms and reports to ensure proper time is credited and to document work habits. The American Library Association code of ethics as applicable to various institutional libraries. Computer operation to complete various duties in the library. Library operations and programming to create a learning opportunities in the library.
Ability to: Apply sound judgment in making decisions in accordance with laws, rules, regulations, procedures, and library policies. Communicate effectively within the institution with inmates of various educational levels and backgrounds to determine and respond with sufficient information for their needs. Direct and train inmates in the operation, maintenance and utilization of library resources according to policy and procedures. Adapt in an institution in order to facilitate library operations through learning readily, reasoning logically and accurately. Operate various types of office equipment and library technologies, such as photocopying machines, audiovisual equipment, and computers to locate catalog information, and prepare correspondence and reports. Use reference indices, computer systems, and information guides, to catalog, file and retrieve library materials. Maintain cooperative relationships with others in a manner which demonstrates mutual respect, tact, and professionalism. Maintain security of work area; prevent escapes and injuries of inmates and control library materials and equipment to ensure a safe environment. Inspect premises for contraband (e.g. weapons, illegal drugs, pornographic materials, etc.) to ensure the safety and security of the institution. Maintain library materials and equipment in order for inmates to have access to library resources. Demonstrate proficiency in the use of various databases within the library.
