About the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC):
The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission is an administrative agency that hears evidence in cases filed before it and makes decisions based on the evidence presented in those cases. An advocate of neither the public nor the utilities, the Commission is required by state statute to make decisions in the public interest to ensure the utilities provide safe and reliable service at just and reasonable rates.

 

Role Overview

This professional-level position performs physical audits and inspections of pipeline Operators’ facilities and operations to determine compliance with U.S. Department of Transportation and Indiana State pipeline safety regulations. The purpose of the Pipeline Safety Division and the Pipeline Safety Engineer is to help ensure public safety through audits and inspections of those who deliver natural gas and hazardous liquids (Operators), and by educating Operators to help ensure compliance with Federal and State pipeline safety regulations.

 

This position reports to the Director of Pipeline Safety and performs the duties of the position under limited supervision. The position generally requires substantial knowledge of pipeline operations and Federal and State pipeline safety regulations. The incumbent must be self-motivated and organized and must possess excellent communication skills. This role is considered a field position, so the location is flexible as long as the incumbent is located within the State of Indiana. Travel is expected to be between 25-50% of the time.

 

Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $79,736.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

A Day in the Life:

  • Scheduling and performing audits and inspections of Pipeline Operators
  • Documenting results of audits and inspections completed and communicating results to the Operators
  • Completion of core US DOT - Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) training program for pipeline safety inspectors (located in Oklahoma City, OK) within three (3) years
  • Educating and training Operators regarding applicable rules and initiatives coming from PHMSA
  • Damage Prevention Investigations
  • Incident Investigations
  • Rotating on-call shifts, once qualified, to be responsible for answering the incident line

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Must possess a bachelor’s degree and have 2 years experience OR have 5+ years of experience in gas or liquid pipelines or the enforcement of pipeline safety regulations at the Federal or State level
  • An engineering degree is preferred, but not required.
  • Other job requirements include: 
    • Excellent attention to detail
    • Solid verbal and written communication skills
    • Understanding of basic IT concepts and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
    • Curiosity to learn
    • Self-motivated
    • Well organized
    • Ability to deal with conflict and stressful situations and facilitate resolution/agreement

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
